What Is Pigmentary Maculopathy?

In 2018, researchers first published a clinical study showing that there was a link between Elmiron® and eye injuries, which the researchers suggested could be a novel diagnosis. Often confused with other eye-related disorders like pattern dystrophy and age-related macular degeneration, pigmentary maculopathy is caused by toxicity in the eyeball. As toxicity builds over time, it degrades the retina of the eye, affecting color and light perception as well as clarity of vision.

Several later studies confirmed the 2018 finding, with one shocking study by Kaiser Permanente uncovering that around 25% of all patients who take Elmiron® will develop pigmentary maculopathy. Because IC is a chronic condition, most patients may have taken this drug over a longer period of time: A factor that can contribute even further to eye injuries.
