What Is Erb’s Palsy? What Causes It?

Erb’s palsy is the result of serious damage to the upper section of the brachial plexus, the bundle of nerves in the shoulder. Injury to the brachial plexus is often caused by shoulder dystocia, which is when the child’s shoulder gets stuck during birth. (Usually, it gets stuck behind the mother’s pelvic bone as the child attempts to come through the birth canal.) This can easily stretch or tear the nerves in the shoulder, leading to nerve damage, paralysis, and various palsies.

Shoulder dystocia does not always lead to injury. When it does, medical negligence is often at fault.

Examples of how negligence could lead to Erb’s palsy include when the birth team mishandles shoulder dystocia, such as by:
